Coaching Staff
Coach Steve Archibeque is starting his 17th season at La Cueva High School, his 11th as Head Coach. He has been a dedicated volleyball coach since 1989, bringing over three decades of experience, leadership, and passion to the game. He began his coaching career at Cibola High School, where he led for five years before pursuing a law degree in 1997. During that time, he remained active in the sport, coaching club volleyball with ABQ Crush, Duke City and High Desert Volleyball and later serving as an assistant coach at Sandia Prep in 2006.
In 2009, Steve joined the La Cueva High School volleyball program, initially coaching the C Team and JV Teams. His dedication and ability to develop athletes quickly stood out, and in 2014, he was named Head Coach. Under his leadership, La Cueva has become one of the premier volleyball programs in New Mexico. In 2015, Steve guided the team to its first-ever NM State Championship—an achievement that marked the beginning of a dominant era. Since then, La Cueva has captured a total of five New Mexico State Championship trophies, earned one state runner-up finish, and reached the state semifinals multiple times, tying for third place in the state. Every year under Coach Archibeque, La Cueva has been one of the top 3 teams in 5A.
In addition to the program's state-level success, Coach Steve has led La Cueva to 10 district titles and 7 metro championships, establishing a legacy of excellence. Recently La Cueva has been invited to the prestigious Nike Tournament in Champions and has played the likes of Mater Dei (top high school program in the nation) Hamilton High, multiple-time Arizona State Champ, and Jesuit, Oregon state Champ.
He continues to coach club volleyball in Albuquerque, where he’s been active for over four years, helping to grow and mentor young talent in the region.
Known for his commitment to athlete development, team culture, and competitive excellence, Coach Steve is a respected leader in New Mexico volleyball and a passionate advocate for the game.
